Watch Brothers Online Movie Review

Don’t misunderstand. Director Jim Sheridan’s latest film, Brothers, is a family film .... of sorts. Not, however, the Disney kind of family film. In fact, searching for signs of a “G” rating in a Brothers online movie review would be a waste of time that might be better spent seeing the movie.

Brothers is a remake of the 2004 Danish film by Susanne Brier and is one of the only directorial projects for Sheridan that he did not also write. Having written or been screenwriter for such self-directed family portraits on film as In America, Some Mother’s Son, Into the West and My Left Foot, it would not be without merit in the course of a Brothers online movie review to wonder if directing another writer’s film might cause it to pale in light of Sheridan’s own dually tasked projects. Not without merit, but definitely mistaken.

Brothers, which stars Jake Gyllenhaal, Tobey Maguire, Natalie Portman and Sam Shepard, holds it’s own when compared to Sheridan’s other films that also portray the complexities of family relationships. Maguire stars as a Marine returned home to his family after having been presumed dead in Afghanistan. Gyllenhaal is his bad-boy younger brother who, after reports of his brother’s death, takes on the responsibility of caring for and filling the emotional gaps for his brother’s wife, played by Portman.

Any Brothers online movie review would be negligent to ignore the gathering of a cast so well known by their own rights for talent. Aside from Sheridan, there are three past Oscar-nominees in the troupe, as well as the girl who could prove to be the breakout star of the year for another recently released film, Carey Mulligan.

After six Oscar nominations for the director and no wins to date, it’s possible the luck could change for the director. Another Brothers online movie review might present a much different view, but if talent were the final factor in the decision, Sheridan would have had his first win years ago. Then again, maybe there’s a magic number of Oscar nominations that can be combined by a group and cashed in for a win. Something about this film, though, tells me that won’t be necessary.
