Many times, the American remake of a foreign language film proves to be much less riveting than its original predecessor. Watch Brothers online and you can rest assured that this film is NOT one of those.
Irish native Jim Sheridan directed this remake of Susanne Brier’s 2004 Danish film.
Sheridan has an impressive film portfolio. His past movies include fan favorites such as My Left Foot, In America and Into the West. Those already familiar with his films will recognize his signature talent for depicting the complexities of family dynamics right away when they watch Brothers online.
The story is strong enough to translate easily across any language barriers. Find a trailer clip and watch Brothers online to see a bit of what to expect from this film. In this version, Tobey Maguire is a US Marine whose helicopter is shot down in Afghanistan. Presumed dead, his fresh-out-of-jail younger brother, played by Jake Gyllenhaal, begins to redeem himself with the family by stepping in to comfort his parents and his brother’s wife, played by Natalie Portman. When Maguire returns home after being a prisoner of war, the conflict begins.
Maguire, Gyllenhaal and Portman would count for a star-studded cast already, but Brothers has more recognizable faces. Maguire’s and Gyllenhaal’s parents are played by Sam Shephard (from so many films but most would remember him from The Right Stuff) and Mare Winningham, one of the original Brat Packers of the ‘80’s.
Also part of the cast is Carey Mulligan. If she looks familiar, it might be because she’s also the star of recently released “An Education”. From the talk that’s circulating, she may be the emerging star in this year’s Oscar pool. You can see a clip of one of her scenes with Portman when you watch Brothers online.
The story told in Brothers has already proven itself to be worth retelling in any language. Whether or not this cast, nearly all of which have at least one past Oscar nomination, will tell it even better remains to be seen.
